I am Jan Iris Smith, a licensed clinical social worker in both Virginia and Maryland since 1986. I work with older adolescents (14-18), adults and seniors in individual, couples, family and group therapy. I earned my BA in Psychology from George Washington University in 1974, completed the training program in Psychodrama ( a group psychotherapy) at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, DC in 1975, earned my MSW in Clinical Social Work at Smith College School for Social Work in 1983, have two years of specialized training in Couples and Family Therapy from 1989 and have been studying various mind/body therapies since 1988, completing a three year course with the Mid Atlantic Council of Healers in 1995.



I am also certified in both Maryland and Virginia to provide supervision in clinical social work to aspiring clinicians and to current professionals.

My work has included inpatient hospitals, partial hospitalization centers, public and private clinics and, since 1991, solo private practice. I believe in helping my clients to find their own truth and health often buried beneath years of misfortune and trauma. Removing blockages in the form of old thoughts and patterns of behavior that cloud the true nature of each person is my goal and working at a pace that suits the needs of my client is essential to their well being. I combine the various philosophies from my training including psychodynamic therapy, transpersonal  therapy, systems therapy and mind/body awareness in my clinical style.

 

In addition to my clinical work, as a result of taking training in energy healing, I became ordained as a minister in the Church of Gaiabriel. I have used my spiritual practice to assist people with various rites of passage, most notably as a wedding officiant. These ceremonies are important to me because in helping to pave the way for people to take the next step in their lives I greatly appreciate the blessings that accrue to both my clients and myself.
